This Homemade Simple Italian Tomato Sauce Recipe is the one I have used for years now! It’s always a hit & one that was taught to me by my mother, who was born in Italy! Â
Please don’t ever mention ‘jar sauce’ around my mom because she will flip out LOLÂ
Once you learn how EASY it is to make your own HOMEMADE version, you’ll never go back to that jar crap!Â
Plus, you know exactly whats going in your own sauce when you make it at home!
None of that “I can’t pronounce the words on the back of the jar” type thing!Â
I will be having a ‘meat’ version & a homemade marinara coming soon too, stay tuned!Â
My mother has always loved to cook her sauce for HOURS, yes..literally.
Thankfully she started dinner early when I was a child so it would always be ready in time 🙂
My Grandmother & Grandfather were also both born in Italy, they always spoke very little English and called the sauce “Gravy”.
Whatever you want to call it, its delicious!
Remember, my mother always tells me, the BEST results will always come from using high quality ingredients (in whatever you make).
When it comes to tomato sauce, using the cheaper canned tomatoes can leave an acid-type taste to the sauce and leave a strange metal flavor in your mouth- not a great aftertaste!
It may be a bit more expensive, I like to use chopped tomatoes and mash by hand OR use top quality canned such as Pastene or Contadina.
The base of the sauce is one of the most important steps because it sets the overall taste and tone of your sauce.Â
You start by adding in your fresh onions, garlic & spices with the olive oil and allow it to really meld the flavors together before adding in the tomatoes.
Its the slow “sweating” of the garlic & onions which extracts as much flavor as possible– then adding the tomatoes on a low-heat “simmering”.
This is a recipe you are going to come back to, time and time again- trust me. This recipe also freezes well!
