FAQ
Do I need to use homemade peach filling for pie?
The homemade filling will taste better than any filling bought in a grocery store. Ditch the cans and make your filling at home with some fresh, juicy peaches and a few other ingredients, such as granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, cornstarch, and lemon juice. It’s easier to prepare than you might think. It won’t take long for you to make the sweetest, most incredible filling for your hand pies.
Can I make these pies with other fruits?
Absolutely! Not only are peaches great to stuff into these little pastry crusts, but so are plenty of other fruits. You can create combinations by mixing peaches with other fruits, such as strawberries and blueberries, or completely change the type of fruit you plan to use in these hand pies.
What type of crust should I use for these pies?
You have the option of preparing it from scratch using a few simple ingredients or buying refrigerated crusts from the grocery store. If you’re looking for a way to save time while still making a delicious dessert, the refrigerated pie crusts will work just as well as a homemade one, so it’s entirely up to you!
Do I have to add the glaze on top of these hand pies?
While you don’t have to add the glaze on top of the Peach Hand Pies, it does add a little something extra to it. The glaze is easy to make with only powdered sugar, almond extract, and milk for thinning it out a bit. Of course, if you don’t want to add the glaze on top of your hand pies, you can always sprinkle powdered sugar on top to give these portable pies a special touch.
Spoon a generous amount of the peach filling onto one half of each dough piece, leaving enough space around the edges to seal the pie. Fold the other half over the filling and press down the edges with a fork to create a decorative crimp. Bake the pies in a preheated oven until they turn golden brown and the filling is bubbly and fragrant. The aroma that fills your kitchen will surely entice whoever happens to be nearby.
Once removed from the oven, allow the hand pies to cool slightly before digging in. As the pies cool, the peach filling will set and thicken, giving you a luscious and delightful bite every time. Though they’re lovely on their own, add the delicious glaze or you can also serve them with a scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra treat.
Recipe Notes & Tips
- If you don’t want to make the traditional glaze for this recipe, you can always drizzle something you like on top of the hand pies, such as a caramel syrup or a chocolate glaze. Customize your Peach Hand Pies to your liking.
- You can add sprinkles and other toppings, such as mini chocolate chip morsels on top of your hand pies with the glaze as a finishing touch. For example, if you’re making these pies for a special occasion, such as the 4th of July, you might want to use red, white, and blue sprinkles as a special touch.
- Store your hand pies in an airtight container to keep them fresh. You can enjoy them cold from the fridge or heat them in the microwave for a few seconds for a warm, tasty pie.
Their flaky crust, combined with the vibrant and juicy peach filling, is a match made in heaven. Whether you’re hosting a summer gathering or simply want to enjoy a homemade dessert on a lazy afternoon, these hand pies are sure to impress.
How to Bake These Peach Hand Pies Instead of Frying
If you’d prefer to bake your hand pies rather than deep fry them, here’s how to do it:
Oven-Baked Method:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Arrange your prepared hand pies on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving space between each.
- Lightly brush the tops with an egg wash (1 beaten egg mixed with 1 tablespoon of water or milk). This helps them brown beautifully.
- Use a sharp knife to cut 2–3 small slits in the top of each pie to allow steam to escape.
- Bake for 18–22 minutes, or until the hand pies are golden brown and crisp on the outside.
- Let cool slightly before serving or glazing.
Baking results in a tender, flaky texture without the added oil, making it a fantastic alternative for those who prefer oven-baked treats!
Want to make your own Easy Homemade Peach Hand Pie Filling? Heres how below!

- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch

- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- A pinch of cinnamon (optional)
Instructions:
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the peaches, sugar, and lemon juice.
- Stir occasionally until the mixture begins to bubble and the peaches release their juices (about 5–6 minutes).
- In a small bowl, stir together the cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of cold water until smooth, then stir it into the peach mixture.
- Continue cooking for another 1–2 minutes, or until the filling thickens.

Peach Hand Pies
Ingredients
Pie Ingredients:
- 21 oz. can peach pie filling
- Refrigerated pie crust
Sugar Glaze Ingredients:
- 1 ⁄2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon corn syrup
- 1 tablespoon water
- Vegetable Oil for frying
Instructions
- Fill a heavy dutch oven or heavy bottom pot 4-5 inches deep with vegetable oil. Use an oil or candy thermometer in the oil to monitor the temperature. Bring oil to 375°F. If your oil is too cold, the pies will absorb too much oil. If it’s too hot, they will burn.
- Roll out your refrigerated pie crust. Use a 5-6” bowl to trace a round shape. Cut out with a knife. If your bowl doesn’t fit onto your pie crust 3 times you can use a rolling pin and roll your pie crust out a little more. Cut out 6 rounds total.
- Spoon about 2 tablespoons of peach pie filling onto the pie crust round (more or less depending on how much you can fit without it spilling out when sealing.)
- Using your fingers, brush water on the edges of the crust to help seal the edges together. Fold pie round over and crimp the edges to seal pie crust together.
- In a small bowl, mix powdered sugar, corn syrup and water together to make your glaze.
- Set aside; cover with a damp paper towel to prevent it from drying out while you fry the pies.
- Deep fry one hand pie at a time in the hot oil. Fry them for 2-3 minutes, or until the pie crust is a deed golden brown. Remove from oil and place on a paper towel.
- Using a pastry brush, brush glaze over both sides of hand pie. Place on a baking sheet or cooling rack.
- Repeat the frying and glazing process with the rest of the hand pies.
- Serve immediately.

The notes says you can bake them in the oven. What temperature and how long do you bake them for?

Hello, In the common questions you mention making your own filling and baking the hand pies but in the recipe you state to use canned pie filling and deep fry the pies. I would like to make the filling and bake them but I am not finding the directions for this. Am I missing something? Please advise. Thanks

Hi Becky! Thank you so much for your comment — you’re absolutely right, and I really appreciate you pointing that out! While the main recipe focuses on the deep-fried version using canned filling for ease, I also wanted to offer an option for those who’d like to make their own peach filling and bake them instead.
I just updated the post with oven-baking directions to walk you through that method. You can find the new section titled “How to Bake These Peach Hand Pies Instead of Frying” toward the bottom of the post.
If you’re making homemade filling, just be sure it’s thickened enough to not leak out during baking (you can simmer peeled diced peaches with sugar and cornstarch until jammy). I hope you give the baked version a try and would love to hear how they turn out for you! I will add that into my post as well for you and anyone else! 🙂

Can you store them after they are done frying? And if so,for how long?
Thanks

Hi there Patti! Great question — yes, you can store the hand pies after frying. Once they’ve completely cooled, place them in an airtight container and store them at room temperature for up to 2 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 4–5 days. Just keep in mind that the crust will naturally lose a bit of its crispness over time.
To re-crisp, I recommend reheating them in an oven or air fryer at 350°F for about 5–7 minutes. That brings back the flaky texture beautifully without drying them out. Hope that helps, and I’m so glad you stopped by the blog! 😊
