Ingredients needed

Cake mix – Reach for a chocolate cake mix for this dump cake recipe. One big thing is to buy a cake mix that doesn’t already contain pudding in the ingredients.

Pudding Mix – Reach for a chocolate instant pudding mix. This is going to give you that gooey molten lava-style richness.

Milk – Whole milk will give the best richness to the cake. Big you can easily swap with a 2% go lighten it up.

Butter – Unsalted butter is best for this recipe. As the cake mix is salty enough.

Chocolate Chips – This is the ultimate chocolate dessert. Adding the chocolate chips adds even more sweetness to the cake. Milk, semi-sweet, or dark work

  • You can use a different flavor of pudding you just have to ensure it is an instant pudding.
  • Mix in chopped nuts if you want a nice crunch factor.
  • Add in some chopped candy bars, dried fruit, etc. Feel free to change up what you mix in for a different flavor.

Tips for Success

Melt the butter but allow a few minutes for it to slightly cool a bit. This will help when you add the milk in. The butter is what will allow the cake to rise properly.

Spreading the ingredients evenly in the pan before you mix ensures they are evenly distributed throughout the pan.

You can serve the cake warm if you want, it will have a slight cobbler-like texture. Or let it set up so it is easier to slice into squares.

Storing Leftovers

If you have any of the cake leftovers you will want to keep it in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It will store for 3-5 days in the fridge. Of course it will dry out a bit as it sits in the fridge a bit.

You can also freeze any of the cake you don’t think you will eat right away. Place in a freezer friendly container and freeze for 3-4 months. Then when you are ready thaw in the fridge overnight, or defrost in the microwave or oven.

Can I add a caramel sauce to cake?

If you want you can add caramel or even hot fudge over the top of the cake if you want. Simply drizzle on top of the cake once it is done baking. I find that some caramel sauces do not work well when baked as it is going to alter the texture. So I recommend adding to the cake once it is fully baked then drizzle on top.
