This is such a superb recipe! You can even mix up the berry filling- instead of using strawberries, try blueberries, apples, peaches or even blackberries! I was making this dish for a gathering of 6 people, every person raved and asked for more! Served with vanilla ice cream, the dish was clean by the end of the evening! This recipe is a winner!
I am going to try doing a version using Splenda next time, my brother is diabetic and he really wanted to try some with reduced sugar so I will have to come back here and update how it turns out!
One of the easiest desserts to make! I have always loved the simplicity of this recipe, all the ingredients are always in my pantry. I use frozen mixed berries in the winter time and use fresh berries in the Summer.
I serve with either vanilla ice cream or a mascarpone/whipped cream mixture. I just adore this recipe.
I know ome crisp recipes don’t use oats/oatmeal, which is totally fine if youre not a fan of it but I LOVE the crispy oat topping, i think it compliments the strawberries perfectly!
FAQ About Fresh Strawberry Crisp
Can I use frozen strawberries for Fresh Strawberry Crisp?
Yes! Frozen strawberries can be used if fresh strawberries are not in season. Be sure to thaw and drain them first to prevent the crisp from becoming too watery while baking.
What are the best strawberries to use for strawberry crisp?
Fresh, ripe strawberries with a bright red color and natural sweetness work best for Fresh Strawberry Crisp. Sweet strawberries create the most flavorful filling and pair perfectly with the buttery oat topping.
How do I keep strawberry crisp from becoming runny?
Cornstarch helps thicken the strawberry filling as it bakes. Allowing the crisp to cool slightly before serving also helps the juices set properly for the perfect consistency.
Can I make Fresh Strawberry Crisp ahead of time?
Absolutely! You can prepare the filling and topping ahead of time and refrigerate them separately until ready to bake. You can also fully bake the crisp and reheat it later before serving.
What is the difference between a crisp, crumble, and cobbler?
A crisp usually contains oats in the topping, giving it a crunchy texture. A crumble has a streusel-style topping without oats, while a cobbler typically has a biscuit or cake-like topping.
Can I add other fruits to this strawberry crisp recipe?
Yes! Fresh Strawberry Crisp pairs wonderfully with blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, peaches, or rhubarb for delicious flavor combinations.
Do I need old fashioned oats or can I use quick oats?
Old fashioned oats work best because they create a heartier, crispier topping. Quick oats can be used in a pinch but may create a softer texture.
Can I make this strawberry crisp gluten free?
Yes! Simply substitute the flour with a gluten free flour blend and use certified gluten free oats for an easy gluten free strawberry crisp dessert.
How should I store leftover Fresh Strawberry Crisp?
Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat individual portions in the microwave or warm the entire crisp in the oven until heated through.
Can I freeze strawberry crisp?
Yes! Fresh Strawberry Crisp freezes well both before and after baking. Wrap tightly and freeze for up to 3 months for an easy make-ahead dessert.
What should I serve with Fresh Strawberry Crisp?
Vanilla ice cream is the classic pairing, but whipped cream, fresh whipped topping, or even a drizzle of heavy cream taste incredible with warm strawberry crisp.
Why is my crisp topping not crunchy?
Be sure the butter is fully mixed into the dry ingredients until crumbly. Baking until golden brown also helps create that perfect crunchy oat topping.
Can I use less sugar in Fresh Strawberry Crisp?
Yes! If your strawberries are especially sweet, you can slightly reduce the sugar without sacrificing flavor.
What size baking dish works best for strawberry crisp?
A pie pan, 8×8 baking dish, or similar-sized casserole dish works perfectly for this easy strawberry crisp recipe.
Is Fresh Strawberry Crisp served warm or cold?
Most people prefer serving it warm straight from the oven with melting vanilla ice cream, but it’s also delicious chilled from the refrigerator.
