Ingredient Breakdown
Sliced Lime & Watermelon For Garnish – These fresh garnishes make the margaritas look extra beautiful and festive while adding even more fresh citrus and watermelon aroma to every sip.
24 Watermelon Jolly Ranchers OR 1 Cup Mashed Watermelon (Seeds Removed) – This is what gives the margaritas their signature watermelon flavor. The Jolly Ranchers create a sweeter, candy-inspired cocktail with bold watermelon flavor, while fresh mashed watermelon gives the drink a lighter, more natural, juicy taste. Both versions are delicious and give the margaritas their own unique vibe.
3 Cups Silver Tequila – Silver tequila has a clean, crisp flavor that works perfectly in fruity margaritas without overpowering the watermelon. It blends smoothly with the lime and sweetness for the perfect refreshing cocktail base.
1 1/2 Cups Lime Juice – Fresh lime juice adds the classic tart margarita flavor that balances the sweetness from the watermelon and simple syrup. It brightens the entire drink and keeps it from tasting overly sugary.
3/4 Cup Simple Syrup – Simple syrup helps sweeten the margaritas and smooth out the tartness from the lime juice. You can adjust the amount slightly depending on how sweet your watermelon is or how sweet you want the cocktails.
Ice Cubes – Ice transforms everything into a thick, icy slush that makes these margaritas incredibly refreshing and perfect for hot summer days.
Watermelon Jolly Ranchers vs. Fresh Watermelon
One of the fun things about this recipe is that you can make it two different ways depending on the flavor you want! You can either use 1 cup of mashed fresh watermelon for a natural, juicy fruit flavor, or use Watermelon Jolly Ranchers for a sweeter, candy-inspired twist that tastes like a fun frozen cocktail from a beach bar.
Using Fresh Watermelon
Fresh mashed watermelon gives the margaritas a lighter, more refreshing flavor with natural sweetness and a real fruit taste. It creates a cleaner, fresher cocktail that feels perfect for hot summer days, pool parties, and backyard cookouts. Fresh watermelon also blends beautifully with lime juice and tequila without being overly sugary.
Using Watermelon Jolly Ranchers
Watermelon Jolly Ranchers give the margaritas a bold, sweet candy flavor that tastes nostalgic, fruity, and extra fun. As the candies dissolve into the drink mixture, they add both sweetness and concentrated watermelon flavor, almost like a watermelon candy syrup. This version is especially great if you want a more vibrant “party drink” flavor or if your watermelon isn’t very sweet.
How The Jolly Ranchers Work
The Jolly Ranchers can be dissolved by letting them sit in the tequila, lime juice, or a small amount of warm water before mixing the margaritas together. Once dissolved, they create a sweet watermelon base that blends smoothly into the drink. Some people also like blending the candies directly into frozen margaritas for extra flavor and color.
Which Version Is Better?
Honestly, both versions are delicious—it just depends on the vibe you want. Fresh watermelon gives you a more natural, refreshing margarita, while Watermelon Jolly Ranchers create a sweeter, candy-style cocktail that feels playful and indulgent. Some people even love combining both for the ultimate watermelon margarita experience!
Final Thoughts
These Watermelon Margaritas are everything you want in a summer cocktail—fresh, fruity, icy cold, and incredibly refreshing. Whether you’re hosting a backyard cookout, lounging by the pool, celebrating Taco Tuesday, or simply winding down after a long day, these margaritas always feel festive and fun. Once you try homemade Watermelon Margaritas with real fresh watermelon, you may never want to go back to bottled margarita mixes again!
