Prepare a light and refreshing Italian-style Caprese Salad using simple, fresh ingredients. It’s the perfect appetizer or side to serve with your favorite entrees. The Caprese salad, or “Insalata Caprese” in Italian, hails from the beautiful island of Capri, situated in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The dish is said to have been created in the early 20th century, inspired by the island’s stunning landscapes and fresh ingredients. Traditionally, a Caprese salad features just three main ingredients: fresh mozzarella cheese, ripe tomatoes, and fragrant basil leaves, all drizzled with olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper.

Basil Tomato Mozzarella Salad Notes

  • Make sure to cook your balsamic vinegar long enough to give it time to reduce. It will take up to 10 minutes to reduce, and you’ll need to give it some time to cool down after.
  • This salad is more impressive by using cherry and grape tomatoes in different sizes.
  • Drizzle the olive oil on the tomatoes and mozzarella first, then add the balsamic vinegar. It should stick better and soak onto your tomato and mozzarella, making the dish even more flavorful.

Caprese Salad Variations

  • If you’re an avocado lover, consider dicing some avocado into pieces and adding it to your salad with tomato and mozzarella. It adds a distinct touch that pairs well with the other ingredients.
  • Some people like to add a touch of spice to their Caprese Salad. If you’re one of those people, use red pepper flakes with sea salt and black pepper when seasoning the dish.
  • Add a hint of zesty, citrus-like flavor by squeezing the juice of one small lemon on top. It tastes amazing!

FAQs for the Mozzarella Caprese Salad

What should I do if I can’t find mozzarella pearls?

While mozzarella pearls are an excellent choice for this salad, you can use other types of fresh mozzarella as a replacement if you can’t find them. For example, you can simply cut thick slices of a fresh mozzarella log and add it to your salad, and it will still taste amazing.

Can I roast the cherry tomatoes before I use them?

While you don’t need to roast the cherry tomatoes when preparing this recipe, you’re more than welcome to do so to add your special touch to this delicious salad.
