FAQ

Can I use a different type of pasta?
Yes. Rotini, penne, or elbow macaroni all work well. Shells are ideal because they hold the sauce, but other shapes will still taste great.

Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat gently with a splash of broth or milk to loosen the sauce.

Can I freeze it?
It can be frozen, but cream cheese-based sauces can change texture slightly when thawed. For best results, enjoy fresh or refrigerated.

Can I make it spicy?
Absolutely. Use hot salsa, add diced jalapeños, or stir in a pinch of cayenne or red pepper flakes.

Can I add vegetables?
Yes. Bell peppers, corn, or black beans mix in beautifully and stretch the meal even further.

Is this good for meal prep?
Yes. It reheats well and makes a filling lunch the next day.

Can I substitute the cream cheese?
You can use sour cream or a splash of heavy cream, but cream cheese gives the thickest, creamiest consistency.

Ingredient Breakdown

Shell Pasta

Large or medium shells work best because they catch all that taco meat and cheesy sauce inside. Every bite gets flavor packed into it.

Ground Beef

The hearty base of the dish. Use 80/20 for the best flavor, or leaner if preferred. You can also swap with ground turkey or chicken.

Onion

Adds sweetness and depth to the beef mixture. Don’t skip it — it builds flavor.

Taco Seasoning

Brings all those classic taco spices in one simple packet. It’s what gives this pasta that bold, savory kick.

Water or Beef Broth

Helps distribute the seasoning and keeps the meat mixture moist. Beef broth adds even more flavor.

Cream Cheese

The secret ingredient for that creamy, smooth texture. It blends with the salsa and cheese to create a rich sauce.

Jarred Salsa

Adds tomato base, spice, and brightness. Choose mild, medium, or hot depending on your preference.

Olive Oil

Used to sauté the beef and onion evenly.

Shredded Cheddar Cheese

Melts into the pasta and ties everything together. Sharp cheddar gives the most flavor.

Optional Sour Cream

Adds a cool, creamy finish if you want that classic taco topping vibe.
