Beef Soup with Cabbage Ingredients
Before you can make this incredible soup, be sure to have the following ingredients ready to use, such as:
-
Yellow Onion – Dice your onion into pieces before you add it to your slow cooker.
-
Garlic Cloves – Peel and chop your garlic beforehand.
-
Carrots – You can use large carrots or baby carrots, whichever kind you prefer.
-
Celery Stalks – Chope your celery down to pieces to add to your slow cooker.
-
Cabbage – You’ll need a head of green cabbage for this recipe.
-
Baby Potatoes – Toss some potatoes into the slow cooker with the rest of your ingredients.
-
Beef Broth – Bring more flavor to this dish while keeping your beef juicy with some broth.
-
Corned Beef – Be sure to add cooked corned beef into the slow cooker.
You’re also going to need olive oil, butter, Worcestershire sauce, bay leaves, and a bottle of dark beer. If you don’t have the dark beer, you can omit it from this recipe because it’s completely optional.
Do I have to use yellow onion?
No! While yellow onion works great in this recipe, you can use any type of onion you have available, such as a Spanish or Vidalia onion.
What types of potatoes do I need for this soup?
Baby potatoes are an excellent choice because they don’t take up too much space in the soup, leaving plenty of room for the cabbage, carrots, and beef. However, if you don’t have baby potatoes, you can use any other potatoes, such as red, Yukon gold, or white potatoes. Simply dice them into smaller pieces before you add them to the slow cooker.
Do I need to use fresh minced garlic?
Fresh is always best when it comes to adding garlic to recipes. However, if you don’t have fresh minced garlic, you can use the jarred kind to get the same result. It will still add incredible flavor to this soup.
Recipe Notes
-
If you have raw corned beef, be sure to cut it into cubes before tossing it into the slow cooker. You may need to adjust the cooking time a bit, leaving the meat to cook longer until it’s done.
-
Adding the dark beer isn’t a must, but it does add a lot of flavor to this dish, so it’s worth a try. And, yes, you can still serve this to your children if you add a bit of the dark beer to the slow cooker! The alcohol cooks off in this recipe.
-
When you don’t want to wait too long and would rather enjoy the soup sooner than later, feel free to prepare this recipe on the stovetop in a large pot instead of using the slow cooker.
How to Store
Place the soup in an airtight container and place it in the fridge, where you can keep it fresh for up to five days. You can also freeze it for a maximum of three months.
