Can this be made without the heavy syrup, as I would live to make it but has sugar in it.

If I use canned peaches in natural juices instead of heavy syrup, I expect it to be less sweet but will that change the consistency of the cake?
Thank you.

Using canned peaches in natural juice instead of heavy syrup will definitely make the cobbler less sweet, but it shouldn’t drastically change the consistency of the cake layer. The biggest difference is that the juice is thinner than syrup, so you might end up with a touch more liquid in the pan.
If you’re worried about it being too runny, you can drain the peaches just a little more thoroughly before adding them, or even reserve a bit of the juice instead of using all of it. The recipe will still bake up beautifully, and you’ll get a lighter, more naturally fruity flavor. 🍑💛
