Recipe Notes & Tips

  1. When using a medium-sized head of cabbage, it’s equivalent to around 10 cups of cooked cabbage, which is more than enough to serve a large family.
  1. If you happen to have red cabbage, it’s fine to use that as an alternative to traditional cabbage. Use what you have on hand to make an impressively delicious side dish.
  1. If you want softer cabbage, allow it to cook even longer. However, if you like your cabbage more crunchy than anything, you can reduce the cooking time for this delicious side.

How to Store Your Leftover Cabbage

Once you’ve finished eating your cabbage, you may have leftovers that you’d like to save. If so, place your cabbage in an airtight container, seal the container, and place the cabbage in the fridge, where you can leave it for up to five days. If you want to save it even longer than that, you can place it in the freezer, where it’ll stay fresh for up to three months! Be sure to thaw in the fridge before heating and serving.

  • 1 pound thick-cut bacon small diced
  • 1 small onion thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 head of cabbage cored and cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt
  • 1/2 black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter

Instructions

  • In a Dutch oven or large skillet with deep sides, cook the bacon until crispy over medium heat for about 12-15 minutes. Drain bacon on a paper-towel lined plate.
  • Reserve ¼ cup of the bacon fat in the pan. Add the onions and cook until translucent, stirring occasionally, about 10 minutes.
  • Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  • Add the cabbage, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, seasoned salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally until tender, 10-15 minutes.
  • Add the bacon back to the pan and the butter. Stir it in until the butter is melted and the bacon is distributed, taste, adjust seasoning if necessary and serve immediately.
