Ingredients Needed
Cream Cheese: Make sure the cream cheese is softened and at room temperature. Otherwise, it will not mix up properly with the other ingredients.
Oreo Cookies: Reach for some Oreo cookies that you will finely crush up using a food processor. Or use a rolling pin and Ziploc bag.
White Almond Bark: I used white almond bark as it sets up quickly, is sweet, and is perfect for making truffles.
Candy Melts: Reach for the colored candy melts of choice. I prefer the pastel look but use any colors you want.
Sprinkles: The sprinkles are optional but it adds a lot to the finished Easter truffles.
Variations to Oreo Easter Egg Truffles
Dipping Chocolate: You can use milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or any flavor you would like. Feel free to play around with the flavor of chocolate you would like.
Cream Cheese: You can reach for a flavored cream cheese if you would like. Try strawberry, lemon, or even a blueberry for a twist on flavor.
Oreo Cookies: Golden Oreos, birthday cake flavored, peanut butter, mint, or other flavored Oreos would make a great treat for altering the flavor of the cookies.
Crushed Candies: Crush up some Cadbury chocolate eggs for a crunch value for the filling. Or use any fun Easter candy you would like.
Decorations: Find cute Easter candies and use to decorate the top of the Egg-shaped truffles. Have fun trying out different decorations to make these a stand-out treat. Bunny-shaped treats, edible glitter, mini candy eggs, crushed candies, etc.
Tips for Making Oreo Truffles
Crushing Oreos
You can use a food processor to crush the Oreos or you can place them in a sealed bag and use a rolling pin to crush the cookies. You want the cookies to be crushed into smaller pieces.
Cream Cheese
Full fat cream cheese will offer the best texture and flavor. But you can use a lower fat if you would like. Also, make sure the cream cheese is room temperature. Let the cream cheese sit on the counter for 30 minutes to 1 hour before you go to make the truffles.
Cookie Scoop
Use a cookie scoop or even a melon baller to scoop up the Oreo mixture. That way you get evenly sized amounts of the filling so you can shape the truffles.
Refrigerate Before Dipping
Make sure to refrigerate the cookie truffles or even freeze them before you go to dip the eggs in the chocolate. Otherwise, it will melt and your eggs can fall apart.
Shake Off Excess Chocolate
I like to tap the dipped truffle on the bowl to shake off any excess chocolate on the dipped truffles. This will offer a cleaner presentation. All the extra chocolate will pool up around the truffle and make it look like a different shape.
Storing
Fridge: Store the truffles in the fridge in a sealed container. If you plan to stack, I do recommend placing parchment paper or wax paper between each row so that the truffles do not stick together. These truffles can last around a week.
Make Ahead: Go right ahead and make the truffles a day in advance if you would like. Just whip them up and then store them in the fridge until you are ready to serve them up.
Freezing: You can also freeze the truffles for 2-4 months if you would like. Place in a freezer-friendly container. Then thaw in the fridge, or eat straight from the freezer.
FAQs
How do I prevent the chocolate coating from cracking or melting when dipping the truffles?
Make sure to properly chill your truffles before you go to melting and dipping your truffles in the chocolate. Another issue could be you overheated the chocolate and it caused it to crack.
Can I add additional flavorings or extracts to the cream cheese mixture?
Go right ahead and use any type of flavoring you would like to the mixture. Vanilla, peppermint, almond, or even a sweet fruity extract will work. Just add a few drops, taste, and then adjust the ratio if you would like.
