- Unsalted Butter– The butter adds a rich and decadent flavor to the cream cheese filling. Like the cream cheese, it should be softened to room temperature so that it blends easily with the other ingredients.
- Sour Cream or Greek Yogurt – To add a subtle tanginess and creaminess to the filling, sour cream or Greek yogurt can be added. Either option will work, but Greek yogurt will result in a slightly thicker, tangier filling.
- Powdered Sugar (adjust to sweetness preference) – The powdered sugar adds sweetness to the filling, and the amount can be adjusted to suit your preference. A good starting point is 1 cup, but you can add more or less depending on your taste.
- Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice – The lemon juice adds a bright and fresh flavor to the filling, which complements the sweetness of the powdered sugar. It should be freshly squeezed to ensure maximum flavor.
- Pure Vanilla Extract – The vanilla extract adds a sweet and fragrant aroma to the filling, enhancing the cake’s overall flavor.
- Cool Whip or Homemade Whipped Topping – Finally, either Cool Whip or homemade whipped topping can be added to the filling to make it light and fluffy. Cool Whip is easier and quicker, but the homemade whipped topping is richer in flavor and texture.
