Cheesesteak Casserole Ingredients

If you plan to make this tasty cheesecake casserole, these are some of the ingredients you’ll need to use:

  • Ground Beef – You have the option of using ground beef or thin-sliced sandwich steaks, depending on what you prefer or might already have in the freezer.
  • Onion – Chop your onion into small pieces before tossing them into this casserole.
  • Seasoned Salt – Season your beef with this seasoning to add more flavor to it.
  • Provolone Cheese – A top choice on a Philly cheesesteak, provolone melts perfectly over the beef and adds flavor to the dish.
  • Minced Garlic – Add even more flavor to your casserole with a bit of minced garlic.

You’ll need a few other ingredients to complete this delicious Philly Cheesesteak Casserole. While most recipes call for green peppers, you don’t need to include them. Believe it or not, an original, authentic Philly cheesecake does NOT include green peppers on it.

Common Questions

Can I use a different type of cheese instead of provolone?

Yes! If you don’t want to use provolone cheese, American cheese is another great option commonly used on cheesesteak sandwiches. If you don’t like American cheese, you can always use cheddar or even Cheez Whiz, depending on what you like best.

What type of onion should I use?

Yellow onion is a great choice for this casserole. You can also use a Spanish onion. It’s better to use a light-colored onion instead of a red one that has a lot more flavor.

Can I make this casserole with ground turkey?

Yes, if you’re looking for a leaner way to prepare this tasty casserole, you can substitute the ground beef for ground turkey. However, it may not taste the same because the ground beef is a bit greaser, thus having more flavor.

What else can I add to this casserole?

You can add some of your favorite ingredients to this dish, including pickles, relish, cooked bacon, and so much more. Get creative to customize this dish and make it that much more enjoyable.

Recipe Notes & Tips

  • Drain your grease before you begin assembling the casserole. It’s important to go through the draining process because you don’t want the casserole to be too greasy.
  • If you’d like to add green peppers to this dish, you can chop them into thin slices or chunks, whichever you like best.
  • You can serve this casserole as is or with a side of ketchup and mayo for dipping. Lots of people love to put ketchup and mayo on their cheesesteak sandwiches, so you can rest assured it will taste good on your casserole slices, too!

  • 1 green bell pepper stem and seeds removed diced
  • 8 ounces elbow macaroni uncooked
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 4 ounces cream cheese cut into small cubes
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 6 ounces provolone cheese sliced and torn into pieces

  • Remove from heat. Sprinkle the mozzarella and half of the provolone cheese into the pan and stir to distribute.
  • Top with the remaining provolone cheese and parsley
  • Please in a oven safe baking casserole dish and bake for 10 minutes or until the top is melted and slightly browned

This looks so yummy! Haven’t made it yet, but I’m looking forward to making it soon. My husband can’t have beef so I’ll just use ground turkey. Thinking about adding some sautéed mushrooms, too. Comments??
