Lime Juice – Fresh lime juice is recommended. If you can’t get fresh lime juice then you can buy bottled.
Orange Liqueur – Triple Sec is what I used for the citrus punch. Now you are welcome to swap it out with any orange flavored liqueur.

- Add in some sliced jalapenos for a kick of spice if you would like. Just muddle the peppers before you assemble.
- Use orange juice in replace of Triple Sec.
- Add in some fresh mint leaves for a minty twist. It will help tame down the sweetness of this drink.
- Swap the tequila with vodka for a twist in flavor. I prefer a classic tequila but vodka would be delicious as well.
- Add in some grapefruit zest or orange zest for more citrus flavor to the mixed drink.
- Rim the glass in lime juice and then garnish with salt or even a coarse sugar for either a salty or sweet element on top of the drink.
- Add mixture into a blender and create a frozen cotton candy margarita in replace of an iced margarita. Then just garnish the top with cotton candy right before serving.

Pro Tips For Success
Measure Properly
Make sure to measure the ingredients so you get that consistent flavor of the margarita. If you just eyeball it that is okay, you will just have an inconsistent flavor.
Quality Tequila
You will want to make sure to use a quality tequila as it is the main ingredient. Feel free to use whatever brand you prefer. But just know using a quality ingredients will provide the best end result.
Mix and Serve
Since you are serving your cocktail with ice, you need to serve after making. Otherwise, the ice will melt and dilute the flavor of the cocktail a bit.
Cotton Candy Flavor
All different brands of cotton candy will sell different flavors of the candy. Make sure to reach for a flavor of cotton candy you think will pair well with the orange and lime flavor. Feel free to experiement and see what you like.
Cotton Candy Melts Quick
Only put the cotton candy on top of the drink right before you go to serve. It will almost instantly begin to melt when it touches the liquid of the drink.
Non-Alcoholic Version
Swal out the alcohol with the cream soda, and the triple sec you can use orange juice or even another fruit juice. Go right ahead and play around with the flavors to find what your friend or child likes the non-alcoholic version.
Storing
If you do not drink all of the margarita mixture, you can strain off ice and store the margarita mix in the fridge in a sealed container. It will be stored for 1-2 days. Then when you want a drink, shake or stir well, and serve over ice with fresh cotton candy and a lime wedge to garnish. I also recommend adding in a fresh splash of cream soda as the soda will go flat in the fridge.
If you don’t get rid of the ice, it will water down the drink a lot. So getting the ice off the drink is going to help ensure you still have that bold margarita waiting for you.
FAQs
What kind of cotton candy should I use?
Pink cotton candy is what I used, but feel free to reach for any color or brand. Just know the color of cotton candy will affect the color of your cocktail at the end once you melt it down.
Can I rim the glass with salt or sugar?
Yes, go right ahead if you want. Just wet the rim with lime juice or even corn syrup, and then dip the rim in the sugar or coarse salt. Do this before you mix up the margarita, that way it has a short bit of time to dry before you pour your cocktail in the glass.
Can I make cotton candy margaritas in advance?
It is best to make this margarita freshly before serving. The cotton candy will dissolve once it touches the liquid. You will also lose the bubble affect from the cream soda if you pre-make the drink.
Is this a strong cocktail?
Yes, this tequila drink does pack a punch. You can reduce the amount of alcohol you use to create a mild margarita if you prefer. This recipe is very easy to adjust to alter it to fit your preference.
