It’s got all the energy of a showstopper without asking you to break a sweat, turn on the oven, or even dirty more than a bowl and a spatula if you play it right.

What This Dessert Really Is

At its core, this is a no-bake, cold, creamy, cookies-and-cream dream that pulls together with only a handful of ingredients — cream cheese, sugar, a little cream, a whole lotta whipped topping, and, of course, Oreos. Double Stuf, because why mess around? This isn’t a time for restraint. This is a time for comfort.

If you’ve never made an icebox cake before, think of it as a layered dessert that leans into the fridge instead of the oven to work its magic. The Oreos soften overnight, turning from crisp cookies into a tender, cake-like layer that blends seamlessly with the fluffy, tangy cream cheese filling. It’s not cheesecake, not quite a trifle — it’s its own thing. And that thing is really, really good.

Why You’ll Love the No-Bake Oreo Cake

  1. This recipe requires no baking, which is perfect for those who don’t have an oven or anyone who doesn’t want to put the oven on, especially on those hot summer days when it’s already feeling hot inside the home.
  2. The Oreo Icebox Cake is so delicious. If you’re a chocolate lover, you can expect to enjoy the flavor that you will get with every bite of this dessert.
  3. You can customize this cake to your liking, using different toppings and extra ingredients, such as chopped nuts, sprinkles, and even maraschino cherries, to give it an extra oomph.

The Method (Or Lack Thereof)

This is the kind of recipe where the process is just as forgiving as the ingredients list. The cream cheese gets beaten until smooth with sugar and a touch of heavy cream. The whipped topping folds in like a soft pillow, and just like that, you’ve got your filling. No fussing with gelatin or baking times or water baths.

Then it’s simply about layering — cookies, cream, cookies, more cream — and a final flourish of crushed Oreos on top. You can eyeball it. You don’t need to measure the Oreos like you’re doing algebra. Stack ‘em in, cover it up, and let the fridge do all the work.

That six-hour chill? It’s essential. This cake needs time to become greater than the sum of its parts. The cookies soak up just enough moisture to turn into something soft and spoonable, but not soggy. You want that just-right bite where fork meets cookie-meets-cream in this perfectly cold, sweet, almost nostalgic texture.

Oreo Ice Box Cake Ingredients

  • Cream Cheese – You will need two 8-ounce packages of cream cheese. Be sure to sit them out and allow them to reach room temperature because then they will be much easier to work with.
  • Granulated Sugar – Add ½ cup of granulated sugar to the cream cheese to give it a sweeter taste.
  • Heavy Whipping Cream – This recipe uses roughly three tablespoons of heavy whipping cream.
  • Whipped Topping – Grab a 16-ounce container of whipped topping and sit it out with the cream cheese, allowing it to thaw before using.
  • Double Stuf Oreos – These cookies are the star of the show. You will need 48 cookies, which is around two of the family-sized packages.
  • Crushed Oreos – You’re also going to need ½ cup of crushed Oreos.

These are the only ingredients you will need to make the Oreo Icebox Cake. Once you have what you need, you can easily assemble this decadent dessert.

Oreo No Bake Cake Recipe Notes

  • If you don’t want to use crushed Oreo cookies as the topping for this dessert, you can always use mini Oreos, which are just as good!
  • Instead of frozen whipped topping, you can easily prepare some homemade whipped cream for this Oreo Icebox Cake. Not sure how to make it? Just combine four cups of your heavy whipping cream with a cup of powdered sugar and use your hand mixer to combine well until you reach a smooth consistency.
  • Make sure you’re adding plenty of cream cheese filling between the Oreo cookies, which will help soften them up so that this dessert isn’t as crunchy. It will be much softer and will practically melt in your mouth with every bite.

Why This Works for Literally Any Occasion

The beauty of this dessert is that it’s low effort and high payoff. Bringing it to a potluck? People will hover around the pan like moths to a flame. Need something easy for a weeknight gathering? Done. Just want a dessert to sit in your fridge all weekend so you can scoop a little out each night while binge-watching something comfortingly bad on Netflix? This cake is here for that lifestyle.

It’s also a great one to make with kids — no knives, no burners, no timing stress. Just a little scooping, spreading, and maybe some sneaky taste tests with an Oreo or two.

Extra Tips to Keep It Real

  • Use room-temp cream cheese. Cold cream cheese is the enemy of smooth filling. Give it time to warm up and it’ll mix like a dream.
  • Don’t overthink the Oreos. Lay them in a rough grid — if you need to break one or two to fill the edges, go for it.
  • Give it time. That 6-hour chill is the minimum. Overnight is even better. It slices cleaner and tastes even more melded together.
  • Serve it cold. This isn’t a room-temp dessert. That cool bite is part of the experience.

This isn’t the kind of dessert you make to be fancy. It’s the kind you make when you want something good — something that makes people smile without asking too much from you in the kitchen. It’s sweet, it’s a little messy, and it hits that crave-worthy, cookies-and-cream spot that most of us haven’t grown out of, thank goodness.

If you’re already thinking about your next batch (and honestly, who isn’t?), I’ve got a Golden Oreo version of this icebox cake on my site too — same easy vibes, but with that buttery vanilla twist that’s dangerously addictive. It’s a great way to mix things up if you’re not in the mood for chocolate or just want to try something new. You can even get a little wild and do a Double Stuf mash-up with layers of classic and Golden Oreos — no rules here, just delicious, creamy chaos. This is one of those recipes that’s super easy to customize, so don’t be afraid to make it your own.
