This rice is great for a weeknight side dish, potluck recipe, holiday side dish, and more. We make this rice all year round in our home. It is versatile but also you can add meat for a meal-in-one if you choose to go a step further with the recipe.

Make sure to check out my souper rice or even this creamy rice pudding which is a sweet rice recipe. Both are tasty rice recipes you might want to add to your list to make.

Easy – This rice recipe is crazy easy and uses simple ingredients you might already have on hand in your kitchen. Throw it together and toss the dish in the oven to bake.

Flavorful – My butter rice is loaded with flavor and is not a typical rice recipe where it can lean on the bland side. Loaded with rich flavors that melt in your mouth.

Family Friendly – Kids and adults will gobble up this recipe. I have found that even picky eaters love the flavors of this buttery rice recipe.

Ingredients

Here is a quick preview of what you will need for this stick of butter rice recipe.

Rice – You will want to use a long grain rice for this recipe. Make sure it is not parboiled or an instant rice as it will break down too much and become mushy.

French Onion Soup – Condensed French onion soup is the gold star of this recipe. It is what you will find richens the flavor of this rice to a whole new level!

Broth – Beef broth or beef stock can be used. Or even go a step further and reach for a beef bone broth for added nutrients.

Butter – Real butter is a must. You can’t use margarine with this recipe as it will not turn out correctly.

Variations To Recipe

Here are a handful of ways you can change up the rice to get different flavors and such. Feel free to pick and choose what works for you.

Consume – You can buy canned consume to use instead of the French onion soup mix. It will offer a similar flavor, I find it is a bit richer.

Mushrooms or Onions – Feel free to dice up some mushrooms and mix them in the recipe for added flavor. You could do other vegetables as well if you wanted like some sliced onions. Take the onions a step further and saute till translucent for a better flavor.

Protein – Add in some diced chicken or even thin pork chops for added protein to make it a meal in one. Just make sure you cook until the meat is fully cooked all the way through. Then ensure the rice is cooked tender and then dish it up.

Parmesan – Consider adding parmesan cheese to the mixture and then add a bit more over the top of the rice for cheesy rice. The bite in the parmesan cheese is a great compliment to the flavor.

Brown Rice – If you want to use brown rice in replace of white rice go right ahead. You are going to find that brown rice takes a bit longer to cook and a bit more liquid. But you will get a similar flavor. Just make sure it is not instant rice as I mentioned above.

Pro Tips For Making

  • Make sure all the rice is covered in liquid as it won’t dry out and not become soft as it needs to be.
  • Ensure you tightly cover the rice so that as it bakes up it soaks in the liquid. If you cook un-covered it will dry out and you won’t get that moist and tender rice you need.
  • If you see the mixture needs a bit more broth add it in. Depending on the brand of rice you can find some rice brands that need just a tad bit more liquid.
  • Spread the butter evenly over the top of the whole rice dish. This is going to help ensure you get that even flavor.

What To Serve With Butter Rice

Not sure what to serve with this butter rice? Here are a few of our favorite dinner ideas that go perfectly with this rice. Try my meatloaf recipe, it is so delicious. Or you can try it with this French onion pork chop recipe which has a similar flavor pairing to the rice.

Serve up this Kool-Aid strawberry pie for dessert to go along with your meal. It is sweet and creamy and can be made ahead of time. All you have to do is pull it out of the fridge and slice and serve.

Best Way To Store Leftover Stick of Butter Rice

Refrigerate – Any of the rice you do not eat needs to be placed in an airtight container and refrigerated for 2-4 days. Let the rice cool to room temperature before you place it in the fridge.

Freezing – Place your rice in a freezer-friendly container and freeze for 2-3 months. Then you can thaw in the fridge overnight or heat up directly from the freezer.

FAQs

Can I use margarine instead of butter?

At the end of the day, you can use margarine, but it will leave the rice a bit greasy and the flavor will not be as rich as a real butter would be. But feel free to swap it out if you need to.

Should I rinse the rice before cooking it with butter?

Rinsing rice is meant to remove excess starches from the rice. You can skip rinsing if you want creamier and thicker rice. If you want your rice to be fluffier, then rinse the rice and drain well before mixing it with the other ingredients.

Do I need to melt the butter before adding it to the rice?

Slice the butter into pats so you place on top of the mixture. You do not want it to be melted as you want it to begin to melt down on top of all areas of the rice for a more even flavor.
