Many think this recipe is like the Croque Monsieur which is a French sandwich. This is an American sandwich with a French twist is what I would say.
What is a Monte Cristo Slider?
The Monte Cristo is like a French toast that is filled with ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese, and paired with a fruit jam. These sliders are a take on the classic sandwich but with a slider twist.

Ingredients Needed
Sliders – Reach for slider buns. Hawaiian sliders offer a sweeter flavor to the sandwiches. Now you could use a butter roll if you prefer.
Deli Meat – Ham and turkey are both used in this sandwich. I recommend using thinly sliced lunch meat for this recipe.
Cheese – Deli sliced Swiss cheese compliments the meat and other ingredients.
Butter – Butter is used to help add flavor but also to keep the buns soft as they heat up in the oven.
Egg – The egg will be mixed in with other ingredients to make a wash to brush the top of the sliders with.
Pepper – A little pepper is used to flavor the top of the buns.
Powdered Sugar – Dust the buns with powdered sugar for a sweet pairing.
Jam – Strawberry or raspberry jam is used for dipping the sliders in. Adds a nice sweetness to the savory.
Variations To Recipe
Buns – You can use any type of slider buns you would like. I used a sweet Hawaiian but you could opt for a butter-style roll, pretzel roll, etc.
Meat – Turkey and ham are both used in this slider. Feel free to use one type of meat or change up the types of meat used.
Cheese – Swiss cheese is my go-to, but Provolone or even mozzarella cheese would be a great swap. Feel free to change up the variety to fit your flavor preference.
Powdered Sugar – Skip the powdered sugar topping if you want to reduce a bit of the sweetness from the Monte Cristo sliders.
Sauce – Add a fruit preserve on the buns, cranberry sauce, spicy mustard, etc. Feel free to play around with any type of sauce to change up the flavors of the sliders.
Helpful Tips for Success
Condiments
Whether you want a condiment on the sandwich or not this is a helpful tip. Spread a thin layer on the bread, making sure to not add too much. Too much sauce can cause the bread to get soggy as it bakes in the oven.
Layering Ingredients
Making sure to create even layers on the sandwich ensures you get all the flavors in each bite. Lay out your ingredients and create even layers of each item on the rolls. I do one ingredient at a time. I find this works best at making sure you get equal bites.
Basting Rolls
I can’t stress this enough, you need to make sure the tops of the rolls get brushed with butter. If you do not do this step, the rolls will get hard as they bake.
Dusting With Powdered Sugar
I use a mesh sieve for dusting the top of the sliders. Let the rolls cool a bit, otherwise, it will melt the powdered sugar. Next dust with a light layer of powdered sugar for a touch of sweetness. Take note this is optional of course.
What to Serve With Sliders
Now this Monte Cristo sliders recipe can be eaten as an appetizer or reach for your favorite sides to make into a lunch or dinner option.
Firstly, you choose to serve up these sandwiches, you have great sides. Pair with a green salad, French fries, coleslaw, etc. Obviously depending on how you serve it will depend on what to pair with your sliders.
Storing
If you happen to have sliders left over simply store the sliders in an airtight container in the fridge. Because of the ingredients, these sliders must be refrigerated. The sliders can be stored for 3-4 days. I then say eat them cold or warm them up in the microwave. Either way, it is your choice on what you prefer.
FAQs
What meats and cheese are traditionally used in Monte Cristo sliders?
Thinly sliced ham and turkey are what you will find on a Monte Cristo, along with Swiss Cheese. However, you can change up the meat and cheese combo if you find you prefer a different flavor combination.
What is the dipping sauce for Monte Cristo sliders?
Strawberry or raspberry are the two dipping sauces that are often paired with the Cristo sandwich. The jam or preserves offer a really sweet pairing to the savory ingredients. I have done both preserves and they taste amazing with the turkey and ham.
Can I freeze Monte Cristo sliders?
I recommend not freezing the sandwiches. The reason is it will affect the texture of the sandwiches. The buns can become very soggy as they freeze and thaw. I recommend only making what you think you can eat. Due to the soggy buns, I think you would hate having them in the freezer and thawing.
Final Thoughts
These Monte Cristo Sliders are the kind of recipe that disappears fast, so if you’re feeding a crowd, you might want to make extra. They’re rich, cozy, a little nostalgic, and incredibly satisfying in that sweet meets savory way that never gets old. I love that they feel restaurant worthy but come together easily at home, and they’re always a hit no matter who’s at the table. If you’re looking for something different from the usual sliders that still feels comforting and familiar, this is one you’ll come back to again and again.

Here are more easy appetizers to consider whipping up for a crowd. I love a good appetizer and I have a nice list for you.
Monte Cristo Sliders
Ingredients
- 12 rolls Hawaiian
- 12 ham slices
- 12 turkey slices
- 12 Swiss cheese slices
- 1/3 cup butter salted and melted
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp pepper
- 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
- jam raspberry or strawberry optional
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Prepare your 9X13 inch baking pan by spraying it with non- stick spray.
- Slice the whole package of rolls (without separating them). Place the bottom halves of the rolls into the prepared baking pan.
- Place half of the cheese slices onto the rolls, then layer on all of the ham, all of the turkey, and the other half of the cheese slices. Then place the top halves of the rolls on top.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, the egg, and pepper. Brush this mixture all over the sliders.
- Bake for 25 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the buns are toasted. If the buns start turning too brown, cover them loosely with tented tin foil. (We don’t want it to stick to the buns.)
- Once the buns are done baking in the oven, remove and sprinkle on a little bit of powdered sugar and serve with some jam or maple syrup. (optional)
