Ingredients Needed

Cookies – Oreo cookies are what you will use. You want them crushed into a fine crumble. You can do this with a food processor or a Ziploc bag and a rolling pin.

Butter – Unsalted butter that is melted will be used for the crust.

Salt – Salt is a must when you go to add flavor to desserts.

Pudding – Instant chocolate pudding is the base of the pie filling for this recipe.

Milk – Whole milk that is chilled is a must. This is going to pair with the pudding and then add richness.

Cool Whip – Buy a tub of Cool Whip to really get the filling ultra-creamy in texture.

Gummy Worms – Gummy worms really give it the appearance of the dirt dessert.

Variations

  • Swap the classic Oreos and whip in Mint Oreo cookies, peanut butter cookies, or other flavored cookies.
  • Mix in a layer of peanuts, almonds, or pecans before you spread the dirt topping.
  • Add some fruit on top of the pudding layer. Sliced bananas, strawberries, or other fruit will add even more flavor to the dessert pie.
  • Toss in a tablespoon of instant coffee granules to the pudding layer to give a nice coffee layer.
  • Grate white chocolate or milk chocolate and sprinkle on top of the pudding for added sweetness to the pie.
  • Add in 1/3 cup of peanut butter to the pudding layer for a chocolate peanut butter flavor.
  • Swap Oreo cookies with a gluten-free cookie. Just crush up the same so that it is a gluten-free treat.
  • You can use dairy-free substitutes if you need a dairy-free dessert.
  • Add some coconut flakes to the chocolate pudding mixture.

Tips For Making

Crust

Make sure to press the crust firmly in the pie pan. It is important as you are going to want it to be set so it slices cleaning.

Pudding Layer

Make sure that when you are mixing up the instant pudding it becomes nice and thick. This takes a few minutes when you are using a hand mixer or stand mixer. If you don’t allow the chocolate pudding to thicken, the pie will be runny.

Folding In Whipped Cream

Fold in the whipped cream making sure to not mix it too much. Otherwise, it can deflate the fluffy texture you want from the pudding pie mixture.

Chill Time

Ensure you take the time to chill your pie. It is important to let your pie set up in the fridge in a covered container.

Slicing Pie

Use a sharp knife that between each slice you can wipe off and clean the knife. It is important to get those clean cuts in the pie.

I recently made this pie for a family gathering, and let me tell you — it disappeared fast. Everyone from the little ones to the adults loved it. The kids especially got a kick out of the gummy worms, and honestly, they added a fun, nostalgic touch to this easy dessert. Plus, it’s incredibly customizable! You could swap the gummy worms for other fun toppings like crushed candies, mini marshmallows, or even edible flowers if you’re feeling a bit fancy.

Storing

Refrigerate – Any of the pie you don’t eat right away you will want to store in a sealed container. Store the pie for 3-5 days. The gummy worms will get a bit hard once they get chilled.

Freezing – You are more than welcome to freeze the pie as well. I like to remove the gummy worms first. Then freeze the pie in a freezer container for 2-3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before you eat.

FAQs

How can I prevent the whipped cream from deflating?

Use a plastic spatula to fold the whipped cream into the pie filling. Using a stand mixer or hand mixer it can overwhip the whipped cream and cause it to deflate.

Can I experiment with different layers and flavors?

Yes. Feel free to add layers to create more flavor and texture. Hot fudge would be delicious to spread in between the crust and pudding layer. Or toss in fruit, have fun trying new ingredients.

Can I use different flavors of pudding?

Yes, any flavor of pudding will work. Butterscotch, cheesecake, cookies and cream, etc. This cake has endless possibilities.

What I love most about this pie, though, is how simple it is to make. No baking required means less time in the kitchen and more time to enjoy the festivities. The hardest part? Waiting for it to chill in the fridge so the flavors really come together. But trust me, it’s totally worth the wait.
