Ingredients You Will Need
Ground Beef: The base of the dip is ground beef. Great source of protein and is flavorful.
Vegetables: Onions, garlic, and bell peppers are used to help richen up the base of this hot dip.
Flour: This is going to help thicken but also add depth to the dip. Without the flour, it won’t be as thick.
Brown Sugar: I used a little brown sugar to help balance out the acidic flavors but also added a hint of sweetness.
Seasonings: Salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper are used to help elevate the flavors of the ground beef and complement the tomato base.
Chicken Stock: I used chicken broth but you can easily use beef broth or stock to replace it.
Condiments: Ketchup, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce were used to help create that savory and tangy base to the sloppy joe dip.
Cheese: Sprinkle some shredded cheese on top for added creaminess but also a savory and tangy flavor to compliment the beef.
Variations to Recipe
Meatless (vegetarian dip)
- Use crumbled tofu, plant-based ground meat, or swap meat with beans.
- Opt for vegetable broth over chicken broth.
Meat Substitutes
- You can use ground turkey, chicken, or pork in replace of ground beef. Just fully cooked the meat as directed.
- Use leftover pulled pork or even brisket instead of ground beef for a super elevated dish.
Spicy Version
- Add 1/2 teaspoon to a teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes.
- A few splashes of your favorite hot sauce will elevate the spice level.
- Mix in some adobo sauce and dice up 1-2 chipotle peppers
Hawaiian BBQ
- Add half pineapple juice and half chicken stock.
- Swap the ketchup for BBQ sauce. I prefer a Kansas-style BBQ sauce
- Mix in 1 cup of diced pineapple
What can I serve with Sloppy Joe Dip?
Not sure what to serve up with this dip? Here are a few ideas you might find to be a great pairing. Tortilla chips, Fritos, pretzel crisps, pita bread or chips, crisp vegetables, sliced bread, etc.
Essentially anything you can use to dip works great. Even if you cooked up some garlic bread and had it as an option would be a great option.
Storing Leftovers
I recommend storing any of the leftover dip you do not plan to eat right away in an airtight container in the fridge. The dip will store for up to 4 days. Then you can reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop in a saucepan.
As well as the fridge you can freeze the dip. Place your dip in a freezer-friendly container and freeze for 3-4 months. Then refrigerate in the fridge overnight or reheat straight from the freezer.
Tips for Success
Season To Liking
With this recipe, you can adjust the spices and condiments to season your dish to how you like it. With cooking you are more able to adjust ingredients and use salt and pepper to season to taste.
Thickness
Since this is a dip it is a bit thicker than just a traditional sloppy joe mix. Allowing the mixture to simmer longer is going to thicken the mixture even more. If you find it is too thick for your liking add more chicken broth to the mixture.
Cheese
The cheese on top is what I find helps it to be more of a dip. Feel free to use any type of cheese you would like. Let it melt down a bit before serving so you get that cheesy pull.
