Ingredients
Round Steak: Head to the store and buy a round steak or a different cut of steak. You can use a cheaper cut as it will tenderize as it slowly cooks.
Onion: Yellow onions work best for this recipe. You want to thinly slice the onion so as it cooks it breaks down nicely.
Mushrooms: If you love mushrooms this is the perfect recipe to slice and toss some fresh mushrooms in.
Onion Soup Mix: Grab a packet of French onion soup mix. This is a dry powder mix that is full of savory flavors.
Pepper: Black pepper is used to help season the dish just a bit more.
Broth: Beef broth or even a bone broth is needed for keeping the meat moist as it cooks and the base of the beef broth.
Worcestershire Sauce: Add a bit of tangy and savory flavors to the dish.
Cornstarch: The cornstarch is the thickening agent for the gravy. It will help create a thick texture without altering the flavor.
Variations To Recipe
- Replace 1/2 cup of the broth with a red wine, for a richer and deeper flavor to the creamy broth.
- Add in some different herbs or spices. Thyme, oregano, Cajun spice blend, paprika, or even some cayenne pepper for spice can be used.
- Add in some diced tomatoes, a tablespoon of tomato paste, and then Italian seasoning for an Italian variation to the recipe.
- Swap the steak with boneless chicken breast to make a chicken dish instead. Then opt for chicken broth instead of beef broth.

Storing Leftovers
Store any of the leftovers in an airtight container for 2-4 days in the fridge. Make sure that you warm it up as you wish, but don’t overcook or it can dry out the meat.
You can freeze the steak and gravy for 3-4 months. Then thaw in the fridge overnight, or defrost straight from the fridge.
Tips for Success
Layer Ingredients
Make sure to spread out the onion and mushrooms so they are spread out over the crockpot. That way it can evenly flavor the steak and such.
Seasoning Generously
Make sure to season generously or you will find your steak is a bit bland. I loved the onion soup mix as it is going to be the perfect amount of flavor. Feel free to add additional spices if you prefer.
Avoid Overcooking
Make sure you do not overcook the steak, as it will dry out and become tough to chew. Check for the steak’s doneness when it gets closer to the end of the cooking time.
In addition to being delicious, slow cooker round steak and gravy is also a budget-friendly meal that is perfect for busy weeknights. The slow cooker does all the work for you, so you can set it and forget it while you go about your day. When you come home, a delicious meal will be waiting for you, ready to be enjoyed.
Overall, slow cooker round steak and gravy is a classic comfort food dish that is perfect for any occasion. Whether you are looking for a cozy dinner at home or a simple meal to feed a crowd, this dish is sure to please.
Allow Steak to Rest
Make sure to allow the steak to rest a bit, to ensure the flavors lock in and your juices stay in the steak. Just remove them and let them rest for 10 minutes.
FAQs
Can I cook this recipe on high heat instead of low?
If you want to opt to cooking on high, you will find you can overcook the steak so watch your time and make sure to avoid overcooking the steak. Make sure to reduce the cooking time if you are cooking on high heat.
How do I make the gravy thicker or thinner?
If you want a thicker gravy mix the cornstarch with a little water to make a slurry, you will add it to the slow cooker for the last hour. Make sure to stir it around so it thickens properly. If you find your gravy is too thick, add a little bit more broth to thin up the gravy.
