Ingredients Needed
Ribs: Reach for baby back ribs for that fall of the succulent bone-tender meat that is full of flavor. Trim the ribs as needed before cooking.
Seasonings: Au Jus seasoning and dry ranch seasoning combine to create a tangy, zesty, and savory base for these ribs that is a flavor bomb.
Pepperoncini Peppers and Juice: The peppers and the juice will add tangy and spicy flavors to the ribs.
Butter: Dice up and place slabs of butter over the top. As it melts, it creates a rich sauce and incredible flavor for the tender ribs.
Variations to Recipe
Meat: You can change the ribs to a different rib cut if you want or opt for beef ribs. Or go completely different and do a pork tenderloin or even chicken thighs for a unique twist.
Vegetables: Add some diced potatoes, carrots, or other heartier vegetables to cook along with the meat for a savory side dish.
Spice It Up: Add some sliced jalapenos or red pepper flakes to ramp up the heat factor.
Homemade Ranch Seasoning: If you don’t want to buy a packet, you can make your dry ranch seasoning mix and the same with the au jus mix if you prefer.
Vegetarian: Swap out the ribs for some jackfruit to create a vegetarian version loaded with flavor and super satisfying.
Storing Leftovers and Freezing
Refrigerate: If you do not eat the ribs, store them in an airtight container for 3-4 days. Then, you can reheat them in the microwave, oven, or a skillet on the stovetop. Just heat until warmed through.
Freezing: Freeze any ribs for 2-3 months. Place in a freezer bag or freezer-friendly container. Then, thaw in the fridge overnight or defrost straight from the freezer.
Tips for Success
Trimming Ribs
I recommend trimming off any excess fat or silverskin before you cook your ribs. This will help reduce the excess fat in the ribs as they cook and offer a better end result. Use a sharp knife for trimming.
Top with Butter
Adding the sliced butter evenly all over the top of the ribs will allow the butter to slowly melt into the meat. It will add flavor and moisture and truly create a nice flavor to the ribs.
Low Cook Setting
When cooking ribs heating low and slow is best for that tender and juicy rib. If you cook on high heat, you risk the meat becoming harsh and even drying out. So low heat is best for this particular slow cooker recipe.
Liner
You can buy slow cooker liners that are great for helping to keep the slow cooker clean. Place the liner in before you add any ingredients. Then, at the end of cooking, store the leftovers, lift the bag out, and toss away anything left for easy cleanup.
What To Serve With Mississippi Ribs
Cornbread: Consider serving up with some cornbread with a slab of butter on top! This would be a great Southern side.
Bread: Go for a classic bread and butter or choose your favorite dinner rolls. Great for slathering up any extra gravy on the plate once you are done.
Mashed Potatoes: For a comfort food side, opt for creamy mashed potatoes, one of our favorite pairings.
Coleslaw: Crisp and crunchy coleslaw are always welcome to go along with ribs in my book. It will help balance out the spice of the ribs.
Cucumber and Onions: Another great side is the cucumber and onions. The acidity from the vinegar is going to help tame the richness of the ribs!
FAQs For Slow Cooker Mississippi Ribs
Can I use a different cut of pork ribs?
You are welcome to use any cut of ribs you would like. Different cuts will take different amounts of time to cook. Baby back ribs become very tender and juicy, while other types of ribs can be a bit tougher.
Do I need to remove the membrane from the ribs before cooking?
Yes, take the time to remove the membrane, also known as silver skin, to help tenderize the meat. The membrane is very chewy, and leaving the strip on the ribs will make eating them off the bone harder.
Can I adjust the spiciness of the dish?
Use mild peppers to make the dish mild and opt for minimal to no juice. To ramp up the heat, grab a spicier version of the pepper or add in red pepper flakes or jalapenos for even more flavor.
How do I thicken the sauce, if desired?
To thicken the sauce, remove the ribs from the slow cooker, remove the liquid, and pour into a saucepan. Then heat on medium, and once it gets nice and hot, stir in some cornstarch slurry. Mix 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 1 tablespoon water. This will thicken the mixture as it cooks. Repeat as needed to reach the desired thickness.
